Can You Use Premium Vinyl On Shirts?

Can You Use Premium Vinyl On Shirts

No, you cannot use premium vinyl on shirts because it needs a hard and completely smooth surface for strong adhesion. It is not stretchable enough to move along with the garment hence it will come off very easily. Fabrics are soft with a texture and they need a vinyl that is thin and flexible like HTV.

Use premium vinyl if you only want a temporary design on your shirt. It will adhere on top of it like a sticker and will stay on either for a few hours or will come off in the first wash. Hence if you want to embellish a shirt for a night such as for a costume or themed party, and plan on removing the design later on, you can use adhesive vinyl.

What Is Craft Vinyl?

Craft vinyl comes in two basic types: adhesive vinyl and heat transfer vinyl. Adhesive vinyl is sticky from one side and has a paper backing that protects its high tack. It is available in two variants: permanent and removable adhesive vinyl.

Heat transfer vinyl also has an adhesive side that is not sticky or tacky when touched. It is activated when heat is applied to the vinyl using a heat press or household, dry iron. It doesn’t have a paper backing. Rather, it has a clear plastic carrier sheet covering the top, non-adhesive portion of the vinyl.

What Is Adhesive Vinyl?

Adhesive vinyl is also referred to as premium vinyl or sticker vinyl. It is a thin and flexible material characterized by a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Just like a sticker, it has a sticky side that is covered by a paper backing. Adhesive vinyl is best used for smooth, non-porous, and hard surfaces. These should be completely clean and dry. It could also be used for unconventional or awkward-shaped objects.

The design side of an adhesive vinyl may come in a matte or glossy finish. Some may include embellishments such as an overlay of glitter, metallic sheen, or various patterns. Adhesive vinyl comes in rolls or individual sheets. You can use it on the following materials:

  • Ceramic mugs
  • Ceramic tiles
  • Mirrors
  • Home appliances
  • Glass objects
  • Pots
  • Vases
  • Wood

What Are The Types Of Adhesive Vinyl?

There are two types of adhesive vinyl with different tack strengths: removable and permanent. Removable vinyl is also called indoor vinyl, while permanent adhesive vinyl is called outdoor vinyl.

  • Removable Vinyl: Removable vinyl does not have a strong adhesive backing. Its low tack makes it easy to take off. You should not use it on rough and porous surfaces, for it will not stick. Removable vinyl can be used on shirts if the design is temporary, for one day only.
  • Permanent Vinyl: Permanent adhesive vinyl has a robust tack. It's used for projects frequently exposed to harsh conditions like changing weather and regular washing. It is ideal for items you want to decorate permanently and they will be heavily used and washed, like mugs, water bottles, car decals, and glasses.

When Should You Use Premium Vinyl On Shirts?

While adhesive vinyl is versatile, it may not be the best choice for fabrics. You can use it on your shirt if you want a temporary design such as for costume parties or special occasions. When peeled off, it won’t leave residue on the fabric.

Adhesive vinyl can be used as a stencil when designing shirts or canvas totes with fabric paint or paint pens. A stencil made from adhesive vinyl sticks securely well onto fabrics so that the paint may not bleed through. Adhesive stencil vinyl can easily be removed from the fabric when the design is filled up with paint.

Advantages Of Using Adhesive Vinyl

The great thing about premium vinyl is that it is cheaper than heat transfer vinyl. It is easy to cut, weed, and apply on surfaces. The application procedure is also less complicated than that of heat transfer vinyl. You wouldn’t need to familiarize yourself with another machine like the heat press. Premium adhesive vinyl is best for use on outdoor surfaces.

How To Apply Adhesive Vinyl?

You will create your design using Cricut Design Space or any other software you are familiar with. You will need premium-quality adhesive vinyl, transfer tape, an automated cutting machine, and weeding tools. You don’t need to mirror or flip the image.

Place the vinyl on the cutting mat with the backing paper facing down. The vinyl side should face up. Once the design is cut, weed out the excess vinyl.

Apply transfer tape on the final design and burnish. Remove the backing, apply the vinyl onto the surface, and burnish again with a squeegee. Once you are sure that the vinyl has adhered to the surface, you can remove the transfer tape.

What Alternatives To Use On Fabrics?

Since premium adhesive vinyl is not a good choice for permanent shirt designs, what else can be used? The alternatives you can use to design your shirt are heat transfer vinyl (HTV), heat transfer paper, Direct-to-film (DTF) transfer, and sublimation paper.

Heat transfer vinyl, heat transfer paper, DTF transfer, and sublimation are not like premium adhesive vinyl that you can simply stick on. These methods need heat for them to work. The use of heat bonds the design securely to the fabric. This makes it sturdier and more durable compared to adhesive vinyl.

Heat transfer paper, DTF transfer, and sublimation printing are outstanding alternatives to adhesive vinyl on fabrics. These three methods are similar in technique for they use dye to permanently fix the design onto shirts.

The most common and effective way of adding a design to your shirt is by using heat transfer vinyl. Also referred to as Iron-on vinyl, T-shirt vinyl, or HTV, it is a material that is great for designing apparel. It forms a robust bond with compatible fabrics, such as cotton, polyester, and cotton blends, and ensures lasting durability.

Apart from shirts, heat transfer vinyl can be used for any material that can withstand heat and pressure, such as:

  • Tote bags
  • Cosmetic pouches
  • Mousepads
  • Coolies
  • Pillowcases

It is advisable to use high-quality HTV such as the one available at TeckWrap Craft for easier weeding and transfer. It can also withstand long-term washing and will dictate the quality of the finished product.

To transfer your designs onto the shirt, you will need a heat press or a simple flat iron. This is because the adhesive of the HTV is heat-activated. A heat press allows uniform distribution of heat and pressure for the HTV to better adhere to the fabric.

Just like adhesive vinyl, you may also need to weed complicated designs before applying HTV on fabrics. Using quality weeding tools, you can easily remove excess vinyl.

Heat Transfer Paper

Heat transfer paper is a coated film that holds the ink till it is transferred onto a fabric. You can print any design you want on it and cut it using an automated cutting machine. Once your design is final, place it on the shirt and apply heat to it using a heat press machine. It will transfer the image onto the shirt, giving a beautiful vibrant print that is long-lasting.

Sublimation Printing

For sublimation printing, you need an inkjet printer, sublimation paper, and sublimation ink. Sublimation printing is very flexible. The designs and colors are limitless because you can easily create designs and print them out. It is best for polyester shirts.

DTF Printing

DTF transfer sheets allow beautiful, vivid prints to be applied to any fabric you like. The design is printed on a special sheet and then transferred onto the fabric of your choice giving amazingly durable, long-lasting prints. The film absorbs the inks and delivers exceptionally sharp graphics and excellent intricate details. You can design both dark and light-colored fabrics including cotton, rayon, nylon, treated leather, polyester, and 50/50 blends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Premium vinyl is adhesive vinyl, like a sticker, it is either permanent or removable. Thus, it is best used for smooth surfaces but is not advisable to be used on fabrics or any piece of clothing. Premium vinyl is used for smooth, clean, dry, and hard surfaces. You can use it for both temporary and permanent designs. You can use premium vinyl on glass, ceramics, canvas, walls, picture frames, boxes, and household appliances.

Yes, you can use premium removable vinyl on shirts. However, don’t expect the vinyl decal to last for a long time. It may peel off after your first wash.

Heat transfer vinyl is recommended to be used for shirts. You can use it to design fabrics made of cotton, polyester, and cotton blends.

Summing It all Up!

Adhesive vinyl is great for various crafting projects but it may not be the most reliable choice for permanent and durable shirt designs.
