Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV), or iron-on vinyl, is a plastic film with a heat-activated adhesive, perfect for decorating fabrics and other heat-sensitive materials. The process involves cutting detailed designs with a vinyl cutter, removing the excess vinyl through a technique called weeding, and then applying the design to the surface with heat and pressure using a heat press or iron. This method allows both crafters and professionals to effortlessly create durable, custom designs.
HTV is most commonly used for custom apparel design, including T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, hats, bags, and socks. It’s also popular for home décor items like pillows, tote bags, curtains, and blankets. Additionally, HTV is frequently used for creating business branding on uniforms, promotional products, and custom merchandise.
The Variety of HTV
HTV comes in various types and finishes, offering flexibility for a wide range of creative projects:
How To Apply Heat Transfer Vinyl?
The application of this superb vinyl film is really easy. If you are new to HTV crafting, you can master the technique with just a little practice. Here’s what you need to do:
- Work on your design on the software compatible with your cutting machine, like Cricut uses Design Space. Set its dimensions, then mirror the image or flip it horizontally.
- While cutting the HTV, you must have the right material, blade, and force settings according to the type you are using. For example, a higher pressure is required when cutting Glitter and Puff Heat Transfer Vinyl. We strongly recommend a test cut before working on the actual design.
- Place a piece of HTV bigger than your design on the cutting mat and squeegee it for adhesion. Insert it in the cutting machine and allow it to cut.
- After cutting your design, weed out the extra vinyl pieces using a weeder or tweezers. This is a time-consuming process, so work under strong lighting and be slow and steady. Using a light pad will make the process fast and efficient.
- Prepare your fabric. Heat Transfer Vinyl works best with cotton, polyester, and their blends. Make sure that the cotton content is high for excellent results. Wash the garment, let it dry completely, and then iron it to remove creases and moisture, if any.
- Now, place your design on the fabric where you want it to be and put a Teflon sheet or parchment paper on top. Apply the recommended amount of heat and pressure for the specified time.
- When the time is up, remove the parchment paper and the carrier sheet. You have successfully designed your garment with Heat Transfer Vinyl.
