The term ‘premium vinyl’ was popularized by the product Cricut premium vinyl. It’s permanent adhesive vinyl that forms a robust bond with any hard, clean, smooth, and dry surface it is applied to.
Premium vinyl is best used for outdoor or permanent applications. It is water- and UV-resistant and can withstand harsh weather conditions. You can use it indoors as well where you need long-lasting results. It is not like removable adhesive vinyl that’s designed for temporary applications and indoor use.
There are many projects you can work on using premium vinyl. It needs a clean, hard surface that is free of moisture. It has to be smooth without any texture or unevenness. You can design:
Premium vinyl adheres firmly to the surface and cannot be removed easily. If you try to take it off, it might leave residue or damage the surface depending on where it is applied. So if your project is temporary, for instance, Halloween decorations on your windows, then using removable vinyl is recommended. Once you place permanent vinyl on a surface, it sticks there for years.
Now here comes the part that you’ve been waiting for—the step-by-step instructions on how to use premium vinyl.
Of course, before anything else, you should have all the required supplies. Here is what you need:
Once you have all the supplies, you’re ready to start working. Begin with creating or choosing your design, then upload it to the Design Space software that comes with the Cricut automated cutting machine. With Silhouette you get Silhouette Studio. Where can you get the designs from?
You can download SVG design files, export patterns from the library of your cutting machine, or create one yourself. Original designs are always awesome, and you can create one using the software. Whether you want to use a vector, lettering, or intricate patterns, it can be transferred onto premium vinyl that will cut and weed smoothly.

Once you’re happy with your design, it’s time to cut it. However, before you proceed, always do a test cut to ensure that the settings are right and the vinyl cuts perfectly. The vinyl should separate easily from the backing sheet to allow for smooth weeding.
For this, choose the right material settings on the cutting machine’s software (see the screenshot below). When you select the right material, settings like blade depth, force, and speed change automatically.
Most importantly, do not mirror the image on the design software. Only heat transfer or iron-on vinyl is mirrored. This step applies to both Silhouette and Cricut cutting machines.

Place premium vinyl on the cutting mat and load it into the machine. Once the design is cut, it’s time to take out negative vinyl pieces. Use a weeding tool for this. If you’re struggling during this process, you can make it easier by following the tips mentioned below:

Once you’re done weeding, apply transfer tape to the design. While doing so, there are several tips you need to remember:

Don’t get too excited just yet! Surely, you’re ready to transfer the vinyl decal onto your project but hold your horses! Don’t forget to clean the surface of the substrate. You don’t want any fingerprints or dust stuck beneath the vinyl decal, right?
If you want to place the vinyl decal on a mug, tumbler, window, or any glassware, clean it first. Use rubbing alcohol and a clean cloth to wipe the surface and let it dry. Avoid touching the area where you want to place the vinyl after cleaning it.
Gently place the vinyl decal onto the project surface, and start with the upper left corner. Work your way to the center and flatten the design using a squeegee.
Once you’re confident that the design has transferred completely to the merchandise, slowly peel off the transfer tape. Viola! You have now completed the project! If this is your first time working with premium vinyl, you may face challenges along the way. But that’s okay!
Work slowly and carefully and follow the steps and tips mentioned above. Practice makes perfect. In no time, personalizing projects using premium vinyl will be a breeze for you!
