Tools for HTV Application
When starting your crafting journey with heat transfer vinyl, aside from your HTV of choice, you need to invest in a number of tools. The most basic and important equipment you need for starting up are the heat press, and cutting machine. Also, below is the list of other supplies you need to begin crafting with HTV.
There are several vinyl cutters in the market. These cutters come in different sizes to accommodate varying production needs. To start, you can opt for a Silhouette Cameo which is a desktop vinyl cutting machine. You can upgrade to a faster cutter when your business is growing.
Silhouette Studio software comes with the Silhouette Cameo. This software is used to create designs and to command the cutting machine.
A heat press is important for it provides the heat necessary to activate the adhesive of the HTV. It sandwiches the fabric or heat-resistant surface and the HTV together for a permanent fix.
As a beginner, you should know that the important thing to look into when purchasing a heat press is its size. If you are on a tight budget, you can start with a 9”x12” heat press. This will serve you fine until you can upgrade to an industry standard heat press of 16”x20” or larger.

Teflon Cover Sheet
A cover sheet is needed to protect the garment from the heat when exposed to the heat press. It also helps in preventing the vinyl from melting. A teflon cover sheet is necessary when you are layering because the vinyl will be exposed to heat multiple times. You may also use parchment paper as an alternative.
Heat Transfer Vinyl Application Process
Here are a few basic steps on how to apply heat transfer vinyl on fabrics or garments:
Step 1: Designing
When all your equipment, supplies, and work area are ready, it is time to make your cut file. Cut files are designs you make using a computer to cut onto the vinyl. If you are starting out and you don't know how to customize a design, there are pre-made designs in the software that you can use.
Most of the softwares are user-friendly. There are also several tutorials you can view online. When designing, do double check if your settings are correct and that your entire design will be cut to your desired size.
Step 2: Cutting
Before you cut heat transfer vinyl, make sure that the image is mirrored. Before placing your vinyl on the cutting mat, you need to be familiar with both sides of the heat transfer vinyl.
The vinyl has two sides - shiny and dull. The shiny side is the clear carrier sheet which maintains the heat transfer vinyl in place during application. The dull side, on the other hand, is the adhesive side of the heat transfer vinyl.
The dull side of the vinyl should face up when placed on the cutting machine. This is the side that will stick to the fabric when heat is applied. Set your cutter to the appropriate cut settings for different brands of heat transfer vinyl that have different thicknesses.
Step 3: Weeding
You need to remove excess vinyl that is not part of your cut design. You may use your hands or a weeding tool to do this.
Step 4: Applying Heat
Position the t-shirt or any garment on the heat press’ bottom plate. Then, position and align your transfer on the fabric and cover with teflon. Position, your HTV in the proper direction. You don't need to mirror the image.
