Sublimation For Beginners

Sublimation For Beginners

Are you beginning your sublimation journey and want to design beautiful crafts and apparel? You have landed on the right page. This is a comprehensive guide on sublimation for beginners. Here, you will find all there is to know about the sublimation process, special sublimation, paper, ink, printer, and the best surface to transfer sublimation print on. Let’s get started!

What Is Sublimation?

Sublimation is the ideal designing process that opens a whole new world of creativity for beginners and professionals. It is best for printing high-quality, vibrant designs and images onto 100% polyester or poly-coated surfaces. The image is first printed on a sublimation sheet that holds the ink till it is transferred to a compatible surface with the application of heat.

Sublimation requires initial investment as you will need special sublimation dyes, sheets, and a printer for the process. Upon heating, the dye turns into a gaseous state and infuses with the fibers of the fabric giving long-lasting results. White polyester shirts are the best substrates for sublimation. Following are the essential tools that you should have in your sublimation kit.

What is Sublimation.

Sublimation Paper

If you are a beginner, you should know that you cannot sublimate a shirt or any other compatible substrate without the special sublimation paper on which you will print your design. This sheet has a coating that is capable of holding the sublimation dye until heat is applied to it. The design will then be printed on a compatible surface.

It is imperative to use premium-quality sublimation paper for vibrant, crisp, and detailed prints. Check out the high-grade sheets available at TeckWrap Craft.

Sublimation Ink

If you are a beginner, you will have to work with special sublimation inks for this printing process. These are water-insoluble disperse dyes that are used to print high-resolution images on sublimation paper that you can transfer on polyester or poly-coated substrates. When heat is applied to it, the dye particles in the ink transform from a solid state to a gas without becoming liquid. It fuses with the fibers of the fabric and forms a permanent bond transferring your design.

Sublimation Printer

For the successful execution of sublimation printing, it is best to buy a special sublimation printer specifically engineered for this process. Beginners who do not want to invest in this tool as it is expensive can also convert the Epson EcoTank printer for sublimation. This will work only until you are learning and practicing sublimation printing. If you plan to pursue it seriously and may even start a small business of your own, you will have to invest in a sublimation printer such as Sawgrass SG500 or Epson SureColor F570 Pro.

A sublimation printer is necessary because it delivers vibrant, high-quality colors that last. It is specifically adjusted to work with sublimation inks, allowing for accurate printing without the risk of clogging. The print head’s temperature helps control how rich the colors look. This printer is built for steady, dependable performance, producing amazing prints that hold up well to frequent use and washing.

Step 2: Select An Image

Choose any image that you want to transfer to the T-shirt and prepare it on the software of your choice such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or CorelDRAW. Set its dimensions according to the space on your T-shirt and mirror the image.

Step 3: Print The Image

Load the sublimation sheet into the printer and print your design. Once it’s done, do not touch the image to prevent ink from smudging. Keep it aside to dry. If your design is a bit duller than the actual colors you have finalized, don’t worry. The application of heat will make it vibrant when transferred to the T-shirt.

Step 4: Prepare The Polyester T-shirt

Make sure that your polyester t-shirt is washed without any bleach or fabric softener. When it’s completely dry, press it to remove moisture and creases. Use a lint roller to remove any fuzz. Place butcher paper between the layers of the shirt to prevent sublimation dye from bleeding to the back side.

Step 5: Apply Heat To Sublimation Print

Place your printed sublimation paper face down on the shirt where you want the design to be and secure it with sublimation tape. Place butcher paper on top and apply heat and pressure for the recommended time. You can use Cricut EasyPress for sublimation. The standard time for a 100% polyester shirt is 390°F to 400°F (195°C to 205°C) for 35 to 40 seconds, applying medium pressure.

Step 6: Remove The Sublimation Sheet

When the time is up, remove the butcher paper and allow the shirt to cool down. Then slowly remove the sublimation sheet. Voila! You have successfully transferred a beautiful sublimation print to your polyester t-shirt.

Important Sublimation Tips For Beginners

  • The process of sublimation should be carried out in a well-ventilated area to dissipate the fumes.
  • Load the correct side of the sublimation sheet into the printer. This is the coated side which is smoother and brighter.
  • Use the correct substrate for sublimation printing. It works best on 100% polyester.
  • If you have decided to convert an Epson printer, you must know that you cannot use it for ordinary printing later on and its warranty will be void after conversion.
  • If you are practicing, use cheap polyester shirts. You will make mistakes initially. A test print is highly recommended.
  • The correct heat and pressure time is very important. If you press for too long, the design will burn. Pressing for a short time will lead to improper transfer.
