If you love to make exquisite vinyl woodcrafts, you’ll want them to last for a long time. To achieve this, you can seal vinyl on wood using Mod Podge, Triple Thick, or Polycrylic. These options help preserve the design, protect it against damage, and ensure that it maintains its beauty over time.
If you haven’t already applied vinyl to wood, we have briefly described the process below. Let’s discuss in detail the sealing of vinyl on wood and the tips that will make this a breeze.
Process Of Applying Vinyl On Wood
Applying vinyl on wood is easy and fun. First, decide which vinyl you want to use. Heat transfer vinyl gives the effect of paint when applied to wood while adhesive vinyl looks like an exquisite sticker. Following are the materials you will need:
- A treated and smooth piece of wood.
- Permanent adhesive or heat transfer vinyl.
- Transfer Tape
- Cutting mat.
Cutting machine .- Weeding tool.
- Squeegee.
- Parchment paper or
Teflon sheet . Heat press if using HTV.
You will not need transfer tape if you are designing with heat transfer vinyl. Below we’ve outlined how to apply a vinyl design on wood:
- Step 1: Clean the wood with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris.
- Step 2: The initial process is the same for both adhesive and heat transfer vinyl till the weeding out of negative vinyl pieces: Finalize your design using the software that is compatible with your cutting machine. Mirror the image if you are using HTV. Cut the vinyl then weed out negative pieces from the design.
- Step 3: If using adhesive vinyl, apply transfer tape to the design and paste it on the piece of wood. For HTV, preheat your heat press to 300°F. Cover the design with parchment paper or Teflon sheet then apply heat and medium pressure for 35 seconds. This is how you successfully transfer a vinyl design to wood.
