Glow-in-the-Dark Corn Hole Ideas You Can Make at Home

Glow-in-the-Dark Corn Hole Ideas You Can Make at Home

Cornhole is a popular lawn game in North America where players take turns in throwing fabric bean bags to an angled board with a hole in it. Cornhole is a fun game outdoors that can be played during the day, and even at night.

One issue of playing cornhole at night is you can’t see the hole and the board itself. So one way to fix that issue is to create glow-in-the-dark corn hole boards. Aside from that, you can create glow-in-the-dark cornhole bags. Let's get right to it!

How to Create DIY Glow in the Dark Cornhole

If you have an existing cornhole board at home, you can try to refurbish it and turn it into a glow in the dark board. This way, you can play cornhole anytime, even at night. You can now organize fun outdoor games that both adults and kids can enjoy.

There are two ways you can create glow-in-the-dark cornhole boards — using glow in the dark paint or glow-in-the-dark craft vinyl. One issue however when using glow in the dark paint is drawing intricate patterns on it.

That’s why if you plan to place intricate designs or texts on your cornhole set, using glow in the dark craft vinyl is a better option. As for the cornhole bags, you can turn them into a glow in the dark cornhole bag, then you can iron glow-in-the-dark heat transfer vinyl on it. You can customize it in whatever way you want.

Supplies Needed When Creating Glow-in-the-Dark Cornhole Boards

To start off, here are the supplies needed when creating glow-in-the-dark cornhole boards using craft vinyl:

  • Cornhole board
  • Silhouette or Cricut cutting machine
  • Transfer tape
  • Weeding tool or pen
  • Glow-in-the-dark craft vinyl
  • Squeegee
  • Cutting mat
  • Base paint (optional)

How to Create Glow in the Dark Cornhole Board

For summer, camping, backyard, or any outdoor activities, playing cornhole is the perfect pastime to have fun with friends and loved ones. If you want to play cornhole at night, let your cornhole board illuminate by turning it into a glow-in-the-dark board. Here are the steps on how to create a glow-in-the-dark cornhole board.

  1. Smoothen the Cornhole Board’s Surface

If you have an old cornhole board lying around, start the process by refurbishing the furniture. Remove the old paint and sand it down with sandpaper. You want the surface of the board to be as smooth as possible so you can easily stick craft vinyl over it.

An optional step is to paint glow-in-the-dark paint over it or stain the wood. If you want, you can paint bigger details on it using glow-in-the-dark paint over it. As soon as you’re satisfied with the base paint and smooth texture of the board, you can start placing intricate designs of the glow in the dark craft vinyl on it.

  1. Prepare Your Designs

The next step is to think of the overall design you want to be placed on the cornhole board. You can place logos of your favorite sports team, the name of your team, or even your name. Gather all the SVGs or vector designs you want to be placed on your cornhole board.

Consider this glow-in-the-dark vinyl as stickers. You can place intricate details like stars, a sun, heart designs, texts, and many more. If surfboards have different designs on them, you can customize your cornhole board any way you want it.

  1. Determine the Right Size and Color of the Glow in the Dark Heat Transfer Vinyl

After you made up your mind about the designs you want to place on the cornhole, the next step is to determine how big you want your design to be on the board, and the color of the glow in the dark craft vinyl you want to use.

At TeckWrap Craft, there are seven colors of glow-in-the-dark craft vinyl available, with baby pink as the newest addition. You may design your board anyway you want, or stick to one color alone for that simple minimalistic look. You can choose from the colors below.

One last tip when choosing a craft vinyl for your cornhole board is to choose a permanent and waterproof vinyl. Since you’ll be playing cornhole outdoors, it needs to withstand extreme weather, heat, and rain. TeckWrap Craft’s glow-in-the-dark craft vinyl is both waterproof and desirable for outdoor application

  1. Cut the Designs

Place the vinyl on your cutting mat, and prepare to cut the designs on your cutting machine. Here are several things to remember when cutting the design on your cutting machine:

  • Do not mirror the design
  • Resize the design on your cutting machine’s design studio
  • Place the vinyl with the colored side of the vinyl facing up
  • Change the settings on the cutting machine into ‘Craft vinyl’ or ‘adhesive vinyl’
  • Weed the designs slowly and carefully
  • Transfer the vinyl designs on a transfer tape. To ensure the proper transfer of craft vinyl into the transfer tape, check out this video below.

  1. Place the Vinyl on the Cornhole Board

Using your squeegee, place the vinyl on the cornhole board. Ensure proper placement and you place the sticker just the way you want it. Use a squeegee to ensure proper transfer of the vinyl on the surface.

Take note that the surface should be flat, smooth, and free of wood dust or any dirt to ensure that the vinyl sticks properly. Once you’ve placed the vinyl, it will be permanent, and will be hard to remove. So make sure you stick it right the first time.

Optional Ways to Make a Glow in the Dark Corn Hole

Other than using glow-in-the-dark paint and craft vinyl, there are other ways you can bring more light to your cornhole board. You can place a glow stick on the borders of the cornhole board. But you have to deal with the constant shaking of the glow stick in order for it to illuminate, which is a lot of work.

If you’re handy with your tools, you can also place an LED light surrounding the board. This is a cool idea, however, this limits your outdoor activity. You need a power outlet for the LED light, so you’ll be limited on where you can play the game.
