What Is A Balloon Flower Bouquet?
This is an amazing decorative arrangement used for special occasions like birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, or other celebrations. It gives a whimsical and playful appearance to the traditional faux flower bouquet that is beautifully displayed inside a transparent bubble balloon with a vinyl message or design printed on it.
The bouquet includes real or artificial flowers arranged in a traditional bouquet style. The latter are preferred for the longevity of the arrangement. These flowers are chosen based on the occasion and the recipient's preferences. Common flower choices include roses, lilies, carnations, and daisies, among others. They are presented inside a transparent balloon that is often filled with air giving them a floating appearance.
The balloons come in different sizes and you can feature special messages, patterns, or images related to the occasion on them using craft adhesive vinyl. These balloon flower bouquets are customizable and can be designed to fit a specific theme or color scheme. They provide a unique and creative way to convey your best wishes and celebrate a special moment with someone you care about.
The Detailed Process Of Making DIY Balloon Flower Bouquet
Making a DIY balloon flower bouquet might be a bit complex but a worthwhile venture. For any project to be successful, the first and most important step is to gather the right tools. Let’s see what you will need:
Materials Required
To make a balloon flower bouquet, you will need the following supplies:
- One transparent bubble or Bobo balloon. We need the 24-inch one for this project.
- Artificial flowers. You can either assemble a flower arrangement yourself or use a ready-made faux bouquet. You can make it with fresh flowers as well but they will wither eventually and your effort will not be as long-lasting.
- Wire cutters. These are essential when using artificial flowers since their stems have wire in them and we have to cut these to the appropriate size.
- Zip ties. This is needed to tie the stems together to make a bouquet.
- One 11-inch long latex balloon. The stems will be inserted in this to secure them properly.
- Two 260-balloons. These are needed for tying purposes as you will see during the process.
- Floral tape. An essential tool to tape the bouquet and cover any sharp edges that might puncture the bubble balloon.
- Tissue paper. This is a special sheet of wrapping tissue that is wear-resistant and durable. It is used for cushioning, wrapping, and decorating items. It is available in single colors and patterns. You can get the ones that best suit the theme of your DIY balloon flower bouquet.
- Cardboard box. It should be 4 inches in size for this project. You can get a bigger or smaller depending on the size of your balloon flower bouquet presentation.
- Floral foam. It is essential to hold the bouquet in place when it is placed in the cardboard box.
- Ribbon. This is used for decorative purposes. You can get the color and width that complements your balloon flower bouquet.
- Glue dashes. These hold the ribbon in place when it is applied over the bubble balloon.
- Hand-held balloon pump or electric balloon pump. You will need this to inject air into the balloon.
- Balloon expander tool. It is necessary to expand the mouth of the latex balloon when stems are being inserted into it.
- Heat sealer. We will need this for sealing the bubble balloon after the bouquet is completely inserted inside it.
- Craft adhesive vinyl (permanent). It is imperative not to compromise on the quality of the vinyl. For premium quality adhesive vinyl, visit TeckWrap Craft - the one-stop online shop for all your vinyl crafting needs.
- Cutting machine. The most commonly used are Cricut and Silhouette.
- Cutting mat. This is an essential tool that keeps the vinyl in place when it is being cut in the machine and protects the surface underneath. It comes in three tack levels: light, standard, and strong. You can get these from TeckWrap Craft. For this project, a green, standard tack cutting mat will be used.
- Transfer tape. This also has a grid on it to facilitate the placement of the final design onto the substrate. At TeckWrap Craft, you can get transfer tapes in different widths and roll sizes to ensure the design or lettering is placed accurately on your DIY balloon flower bouquet.
- Squeegee. A must-have to ensure crease-free, strong adhesion.
- Weeding tool. At TeckWrap Craft we have a tweezer, weeder and weeding pens. All of these are essential for taking our negative vinyl from the cut design. They make the job easier and faster. Choose the one that you are most comfortable using.
- Scissors. Get small ones for cutting tape and ribbon.
- Craft knife. For cutting floral foam according to the size of the box.
Step By Step Guide To DIY Balloon Flower Bouquet
Balloon flower bouquets are definitely trickier than your average crafting projects. To make one, you will need to complete the following steps:
Step 1: Preparing The Balloon
- Take a 24-inch balloon. Stretch it out by pulling at opposite ends of the material. Work in sections and rotate the balloon until you’ve made your way around the entire seam. Bubble balloons are quite durable, so don’t worry about accidentally tearing them at this step.
- Stretch out the neck of the balloon as well. Make sure to pull it both downwards and side-to-side.
- Next, inflate the balloon using a hand-held or electric balloon pump. This will stretch out the bubble balloon even more. Now let the air out and flatten the balloon against the table.
- Use a pair of scissors to make a small cut along the top seam of the balloon. The flower bouquet will be inserted through this hole. Make sure that the cut is wide enough for this to be possible hence it depends on how big your bouquet is.
Step 2: Preparing The Flowers
- Prepare your bouquet. If you’re using individual flowers, place them in a bundle and tie a zip tie around the stems. Take the wire cutter and trim off the excess zip tie. This might make its end a bit sharp so wrap floral tape around it so that it does not damage the balloon. You can also use a ready-made flower arrangement for this step. The top of the bouquet should not be more than 9 inches in diameter.
- Use a wire cutter to trim the bouquet, leaving about one inch of the stems below the zip tie. Use a wire cutter to trim the bouquet, leaving about one inch of the stems below the zip tie.
- Take some floral tape and wrap it around the stems of the bouquet. Also, cover the ends of the stems with tape because faux flowers have wires going through their stems. This will prevent the sharp ends from puncturing the bubble balloon.
- The end of the bouquet would be inside the neck of the bubble balloon and we do not want any air leaking from there. We will seal this section by taking an empty 11-inch latex balloon and inserting the stems in it using a balloon expander. This should cover the stems till just above the zip tie bump.
- To ensure that this doesn’t get any air inside it, tightly wrap this entire latex balloon with stems inside it with an empty 260-balloon and then tie the ends of it in a knot. Cut the extra ends of the 260-balloon and wrap it with tape as well.
Step 3: Making The Bubble Balloon Flower Bouquet
Now that the bouquet is ready, we can place it inside the balloon.
- Open up the hole you’ve cut at the top seam and insert the flowers inside. The stem of the bouquet should be inserted first. Pull the edges of the balloon up and over each of the flowers. Rotate the bouquet as you do so. You can expand the opening slightly if it’s not big enough for all the flowers. Make sure the stems go into the nozzle of the bubble balloon.
- Once the entire bouquet has been placed inside, you might see that the flowers are a bit scrunched. Don’t worry, they will get back to their shape when the balloon is inflated. Pull the edges of the bubble balloon up above the flowers and hold the seam with your hands. The stem section should be in the nozzle of the bubble balloon.
- Now it is time to seal the cut made earlier. Turn on the heat sealer. Start at one edge of the seam and place it inside the sealer. Press down for a few seconds. Work in sections and make your way around the seam until the entire cut is closed perfectly. Take your time as this is the most crucial step and you will want to get it right.
- Next, you’ll need to check for leaks. Inflate the balloon using the air pump. You do not need to inflate it to its full size. Remove the balloon from the pump and hold its neck tightly. Slowly run your hand over the seam to check for any leaks. Also, look for any hissing sounds.
- If you feel any air coming through, deflate the balloon and place that section of the seam into the heat sealer again. Once you’ve removed any leaks and you are sure that the air is not coming out, inflate the balloon to its full size and hold tightly from the nozzle.
- Now seal the nozzle of the bubble balloon. Take the other empty 260-balloon and wrap it around the nozzle tightly. Stretch it nice and tight and then take the two tails together and tie them in a knot.
Step 4: Preparing The Base
- Now let's prepare the base of our DIY balloon flower bouquet. Take a cardboard box, turn it upside down, and press it onto a piece of floral foam. The box will leave behind an indent. Use a craft knife to cut this shape out in the foam. This will give you the exact size of the box.
- Take two sheets of decorative tissue paper and stuff them inside the box. Press the center inside and fold the corners of the sheets outwards.
- Take 2 more sheets of tissue paper and place them on top of the previous ones, rotating them at 45 degrees so that their corners radiate out creating a starburst effect. You should ensure that the color of the tissue paper matches the color scheme of your flower bouquet.
- Press the floral foam block that you have cut all the way to the base of the box. Place a tissue paper on top of it to hide it.
- Set the flower bouquet inside the box by gently pressing it into the floral foam. Press down until the bubble balloon has reached the edge of the box. Align the seam of the balloon with the flat side of the box. This will make it easier to hide them.
- Take more tissue paper sheets. You can take the ones with patterns as well if they go along with your bouquet theme and place them around the balloon inside the box. You can make them fan-shaped or arrange them in any other way you want. The whole idea is to hide the edges and form a decorative pattern around the balloon.
- Take a ribbon and center it underneath the box attaching it with a glue dash. It should be aligned with the seam of the balloon. It should be centered in such a way that its two ends are long enough to easily wrap around the seam of the balloon.
- Bring up a section of the ribbon so that it covers the seam of the balloon from one side and attach it with a glue dash on top of the balloon.
- Bring up the other section of the ribbon covering the seam from the other side. Both the ribbons should overlap a bit at the top. Use a glue dash to attach it as well. Trim off the excess.
- Cut another piece of ribbon and make a bow. Use glue to attach the bow to the top of the balloon to hide the overlapped section.
How To Decorate Your DIY Balloon Flower Bouquet Using Craft Adhesive Vinyl?
Step 1: Preparing The Vinyl Decal
- Choose a design or message that you want on your balloon and finalize its dimensions on the software that comes with your cutting machine. If you use Cricut, you will use Design Space, to adjust the size and shape of your vinyl design. With Silhouette you get Silhouette Studio.
- Take the craft adhesive vinyl color and finish that will complement the overall look of your balloon flower bouquet. Cut a rectangular piece out of it slightly bigger than the design you have finalized on the software.
- Place the vinyl on the cutting mat with the shiny side facing up. Align it with the grid on the mat from the left-hand corner. Use a squeegee to press down on the vinyl in order to ensure that it is firmly secured. Load the cutting mat into the machine.
- Once the design has been cut, use a weeding tool to remove the negative vinyl. You can use a tweezer, weeder, or a weeding pen. You can get these easily from the ‘Accessories’ section of TeckWrap Craft.
- When the weeding is done, you will have the final design that you initially visualized in front of you. It's time to apply the transfer tape. At TeckWrap Craft, we have premium quality transfer tapes available with grids on them for easy placement. Cut a piece from them such that it is slightly larger than your vinyl design. Peel off the backing. Stick the transfer tape onto the vinyl design.
- Press down on the tape using a squeegee. Start from the center of the transfer tape and move outward towards the edges, firmly pressing down as you go.
- When you are sure that your decal has stuck to the transfer tape, peel off the backing from the adhesive vinyl. Your design should now be attached to the transfer tape.
Step 2: Adding The Vinyl Decal To Your DIY Balloon Flower Bouquet
It is time to apply the permanent craft adhesive vinyl decal to the balloon flower bouquet we have just created. This is the final step:
- Take the transfer tape with the vinyl design on it and position it over the surface of the balloon. Once the design is in place, use your fingers to press down on the vinyl gently. Start from the center and work your way toward the edges until the image has completely transferred.
- When the vinyl has been shifted onto the surface of the bubble balloon, slowly peel back the transfer tape at an angle. Be very gentle and stay close to the surface. Your design has been applied!
Your beautiful DIY balloon flower bouquet is ready to gift to your friends and family on special occasions and win praise. Since it is a handmade gift, it communicates extra love for the one it is presented to. You can also use these as decoration for special occasions. These can be used as centerpieces on tables for birthdays, baby showers, anniversaries, and so on. You can make handheld balloon flower bouquets as well that will be slightly smaller in size.
