Are you all geared up to create some beautiful heat transfer vinyl crafts but do not have a fancy heat press? Don’t worry, you can still do it. Yes, you can use an iron instead of a heat press to apply heat and pressure to your designs but we do not guarantee the same professional results. Your HTV design will be transferred with an iron but the consistency of heat and pressure with a heat press allows better adhesion and durability. Let’s delve more into how initially, you can use an iron for your crafts.
You are a beginner who has not yet bought a heat press. For a sucessful design transfer, here are the tools and equipment you should have:
Make sure the iron plate is clean and free of any debris. For hard-to-remove stubborn stains or marks, mix two tablespoons of baking soda with one tablespoon of water to create a paste. Gently rub the paste on the cool iron plate and wipe it off with a damp cloth.
Make sure to remove any water in the reservoir of your steam iron. You cannot use the steam function of your household iron when working with HTV. Don’t forget to leave the iron in an upright position after use.
You can use any heat-activated product to transfer designs on your fabric may it be an HTV or heat transfer paper. Heat transfer vinyl is available in many different colors and finishes such as Glitter, PU, Glow in the Dark, Pattern, and more. If you are using heat transfer paper, you can print any picture, design, or graphic on it and transfer it to your garment with the application of heat. It is also available in different finishes.
Heat transfer projects can be done on t-shirts, aprons, caps, jackets, and even pillowcases and canvas tote bags. For T-shirts, you can use the following materials:
Use this to protect the workspace surface. This is to be placed between the table and the garment or apparel you will be using.
This is used to protect the iron from burning the vinyl. You may use any of the following:
An iron can be used instead of a heat press to transfer designs onto garments by those new to crafting. If you are on the path to becoming a professional designer, you will have to invest in a premium-quality heat press machine. Why? Because with a heat press, you can apply the exact amount of heat and pressure that is required for the specific vinyl used. Plus, you can set the exact time too. This results in clean, crisp, professional, and time-efficient transfers that last for a long time without peeling, cracking, or fading.
Q. Can you use any iron for this project?
Yes, any household iron will do. A dry, flat iron with no holes on the plate will be a better option than a steam iron.
Q. Will the project be hot or cold peel?
This depends on the brand of vinyl you are using. TeckWrap Craft Heat Transfer Vinyl is a cold peel film. This means that the HTV design is allowed to cool down before removing the carrier sheet.
Q. Should I put the iron setting on high?
Yes, the iron will be set on high. The cotton or linen setting can do the trick. Since an iron will not match the exact setting of a heat press, it is best to apply pressure on the design using its middle, broad portion where its heat is concentrated.
A household iron can be used instead of a heat press for easy DIY vinyl projects but let’s say, if you are considering getting into a t-shirt designing business, investing in a heat press would be a wise decision. With it, you can create top-notch tees in a fraction of the time.
You can now make an informed decision whether to use an iron or a heat press for your projects. Check out our TeckWrap Craft for unique DIY crafting ideas for garments, personal projects, or customized gifts for every occasion.
