PU Vinyl is a smooth and glossy polyurethane heat transfer film that adds vibrant color and style to your garments. You can apply PU Vinyl on fabric by cutting it into your desired shape or design and using heat and pressure for a specific time to transfer it to the material. The best compatible fabrics include cotton, polyester, and cotton blends. Here’s the complete process of designing with PU HTV.
Method Of Applying PU Vinyl To Fabric
For excellent results, follow this step-by-step guide to transferring the PU Vinyl design to the fabric. You can add patterns, lettering, and logos to your shirts, t-shirts, tote bags, accessories, and soft decor items. Here's how:
Step 1: Get The Tools Ready
This is what you need:
- Premium PU Heat Transfer Vinyl.
- An automated cutting machine like Cricut or Silhouette.
- Cutting mat
- Weeding tools.
- Heat press machine.
- Parchment paper or Teflon sheet.
Step 2: Prepare The Fabric
Wash the fabric you want to design, whether it’s a shirt, hoodie, or pillowcase. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. Let it dry completely, then press it to remove creases and any remaining moisture.
Step 3: Work On Your PU Vinyl Design
Finalize your design in the software compatible with your cutting machine. Cricut uses Design Space. Set its dimensions according to the space on your fabric where you want to place it. Select the material in the software and mirror the image.
Step 4: Cut And Weed The PU HTV Design
Place a piece of your Heat Transfer Vinyl bigger than your design on the cutting mat with the dull side facing up and allow the machine to cut. When the job is done, weed out the negative vinyl pieces using a weeder, tweezer, or a weeding pen. Once you have the final design in front of you, it’s time to transfer.
Step 5: Apply The Design To The Fabric
Place the PU Heat Transfer Vinyl design on the fabric with the shiny side facing up and place parchment paper on top. Apply heat and pressure to it. The ideal setting is 266 ℉ to 284 ℉, depending on the material you are using, with medium pressure for 8 to 12 seconds.
